The year 1962, the year of the country’s Independence, marked the beginning of the largest single sewerage project in Trinidad and Tobago. The project was completed in 1965 and saw the sewering of Port of Spain, San Fernando and Arima.

The infrastructure comprised the installation of some 384 km (243 miles) of sewer pipes and the construction of pumping stations in the three municipalities.
