WASA PLANTS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO ALMOST BACK TO FULL OPERATION

The Water and Sewerage Authority (the Authority) advises customers affected by disruptions at several Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) caused by recent heavy rainfall that all its plants in Tobago have been returned to full operation, while only two facilities continue to be affected in Trinidad. Pipe borne water supply schedules from water production facilities which have been returned to service are expected to return to normal over the next 36 - 48 hours as communities affected by flooding continue their cleanup efforts.

As at today – Wednesday October 24th, 2018, production is still affected at Quare WTP in Valencia (which continues to experience turbid river conditions) and the  Caroni WTP  which is currently producing 59 million gallons daily (mgd) (as compared to normal production of 75 mgd), due to ongoing mechanical problems that are expected to be corrected by October 27th, 2018. 

Areas which continue to be affected include those supplied by the Caroni WTP - Santa Cruz, Belmont, Morvant, Cascade, St. James, Cocorite, Kelly, St. Helena, Caroni, Chaguanas, Longdenville, Couva, Carapichaima, Claxton Bay, Gasparillo, Marabella, Pleasantville, San Fernando, La Romaine, South Oropouche, Siparia, Debe, Penal and La Brea; as well as Valencia, which is supplied by the Quare WTP. 

In another water supply related matter, customers in Santa Rosa, Arima, who are currently experiencing low pressures or no water are advised that the Authority is presently carrying out checks along the distribution system in the area to determine the cause of this problem. Every effort is being made to have the water supply to the area restored in the shortest time possible.

Customers are reminded that if an interruption in supply was experienced in areas which were flooded, they are advised to boil water that is to be used for drinking, food preparation or personal hygiene. Alternatively, household bleach can be used to sterilize water by adding four (4) drops of bleach per gallon of water (equivalent to 125 millimeters of household bleach to 400 gallons of water). If bleach is used, water should be left to sit for one hour before use.
